Before connecting with Hired, Sylvia had experienced periods of substance use and instability. About two and half years ago, she entered a two-year program through Minnesota Adult & Teen Challenge which allowed her more stability to focus on career goals.
With greater stability in her life, Sylvia was able to reunite with her youngest son and begin building a future for them together. She connected with Hired through a county referral and began to work with an employment counselor to set career and financial goals and identify resources that could help her move forward.
One of her goals was renewing her cosmetology license, which had lapsed 15 years earlier. With Hired’s support, including assistance with testing costs and transportation support, Sylvia finally accomplished the goal she had been dreaming of for years.
Today, Sylvia works full-time as a client care supervisor at Minnesota Adult & Teen Challenge, where she supports women going through the same program she completed. She also works with her own cosmetology clients on the side and, perhaps most importantly, has a renewed confidence in what she can accomplish. She is thinking about her next steps, including continuing to grow in her career, pursuing a degree in counseling or mental health, and finding ways to give back to others.
Speaking about her path with Hired, Syliva said, "It works. People need support... people to stick by us and help us get on our feet. It's not just financial, it's also having someone set deadlines, remind you, and help you make a goal plan. Now I know that whatever goal I set, I can get it done.”
Sylvia’s story shows what can happen when someone has the opportunity and support to keep moving forward.
