Rachel’s Story: Breaking barriers with technology to learn new skills

This training program finally gave me the push I needed for my career,” says Rachel, who registered for Hired’s online Medical Call Center training in June.

It wasn’t easy, though. Without a personal computer, Rachel lacked access to training and job applications, especially during the pandemic. But she was determined to gain skills to reach her career goals, despite the technical barriers she faced.

Rachel used the computer at her local library to meet virtually with her Hired employment counselors. She used her phone to listen to online Medical Call Center classes. Halfway through the program, Rachel’s employment counselors surprised her with a laptop, thanks to funding through MicroGrants and Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development.

With access to technology at home, Rachel finished the rest of her training and eagerly began job searching with her new laptop.

“I TOOK A BIG RISK WHEN I DECIDED TO PUT ALL MY FOCUS ON THIS TRAINING, BUT I’M SO GRATEFUL I DID.”

Rachel’s story is to be continued; she recently submitted applications to several large healthcare companies for call center positions. Hired will continue to support Rachel through her job search and future career.
