Ajax workerHIRED Receives First United Way Grant

HIRED recently reached a significant milestone by securing their first ever grant from United Way.

HIRED’s proposal was selected after a rigorous review, and received an impressive rating in the extraordinarily competitive process. The grant – monies totaling $220,000 which will be distributed in 2008 – will serve to support HIRED’s industry sector training initiatives. The sector initiatives provide training to low-income workers in order to prepare them for careers in fields that pay at least $12 per hour and offer opportunities for advancement. United Way has determined that $12 per hour is the minimum amount workers must earn to support a family and begin moving out of poverty.

Laura Vitelli, HIRED’s director of development and communications and lead author of the grant, said, “Our sector training initiatives do such important work and serve as the primary means for many people to move out of poverty. This grant will help HIRED continue to provide outstanding attention and programming to these people.”

M-Powered Training Program Receives Funding

YoungThe United States Department of Labor recently announced that HIRED’s M-Powered training program will receive funding for a new metalworking skills apprenticeship program designed for young offenders in Minnesota’s correctional system.

This new program is a collaborative effort between the National Institute for Metalworking Skills, Hennepin Technical College, the Minnesota Department of Corrections and The Apprenticeship Unit at the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry.

It will train young adults for careers in the precision manufacturing industry.
