Census 2010: How HIRED is Making a Difference

Step inside a HIRED office today, and you’ll notice our efforts to support the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2010 survey. This is because HIRED is committed to a complete and accurate count in the communities we serve – from Burnsville to North Minneapolis. Not responding to the Census jeopardizes adequate funding for services and infrastructure in our communities. $6.2 billion is allocated annually in federal program funds to Minnesota, based in whole or in part on Census Bureau data. That amounts to $1,204 per person annually, or $12,000 over a decade for each person counted in the Census – and $12,000 lost for everyone missed!

It also impacts our political representation. Minnesota is dangerously close to losing one of its eight Congressional seats, reducing our state’s voice in the nation’s affairs. Estimates show that the difference between losing and keeping a seat could be as small as 2,000 people; given that there are over 5 million people to count, we can’t afford to miss anyone.

Donate Your Formal Wear and Help HIRED Youth

Do you remember your high school prom? Formal attire … time with friends … lasting memories. It is a much-anticipated event for many of our local high school students. At HIRED, we know our young clients are working hard – juggling school, work and family – and making great strides that should be celebrated. That’s why we’ve teamed up with Perfect Little Spa and Salon in St. Paul to provide the young women we serve with an unforgettable prom experience.

Throughout the month of March, Perfect Little Spa and Salon will host a “Dress Drive” to collect formal dresses, shoes, purses and accessories that are clean and in excellent condition. The items donated will be available for sale at a significant discount and proceeds will benefit HIRED’s youth programs. In addition, all of the girls who purchase a dress from the drive will receive free services for their big day – hair, makeup, nails and photos!

So open your closets, and donate your gently used gowns and accessories to this great cause. The young women in HIRED’s youth programs will thank you – and, Perfect Little Spa and Salon will too – with a $5 off coupon for any service they offer.
