Broadway StudentUrban Adventure Visits HIRED's Broadway Culinary Training Program

It hasn't happened overnight, but in the course of its 41-year history, HIRED has grown to be a leading provider of workforce development in the Twin Cities. One individual who has helped the organization reach this level of success is Peter Heegaard, a longtime supporter of HIRED and the founder and director of Urban Adventure – an organization that introduces financial executives to the area's most challenging urban issues. Having served on HIRED's Board of Directors and volunteered with the organization for decades, Heegaard's partnership with HIRED has taken on new meaning through his work with Urban Adventure. Today, Heegaard is sharing HIRED's work with hundreds of his colleagues, helping to articulate the important role the organization plays in the health and vitality of the Twin Cities community.

Broadway StudentIn a recent visit to HIRED's innovative Culinary Training Program at Broadway High School, Heegaard and his Urban Adventure colleagues had a chance to speak with members of HIRED's leadership team and visited firsthand with some of the youth who have benefited from HIRED's services. In addition to a brief presentation, guests were treated to a freshly prepared meal by the students.

"HIRED's mission is one that I believe in wholeheartedly, and it doesn't take long for others to realize that their programs offer a great return on investment," says Heegaard.

Throughout the year, HIRED offers community members a variety of opportunities to take part in special programs designed to give friends and supporters of the organization a firsthand look at HIRED's life-changing mission.

Star TribuneHIRED Executive Director Quoted in Star Tribune

The Star Tribune looked no further than HIRED Executive Director Jane Samargia for expert testimony on the current economy and what the job market means for Minnesota families.
In an October 4 piece by Dee DePass titled "Loss of Jobs Hits Home," Samargia comments on the number of dislocated workers the organization has served this year and the rapidly changing employment market. The article, which has been posted to HIRED's website, can be seen here.

The very next day, Samargia was quoted in a second article that appeared in the Star Tribune titled "Many Minnesotans at End of Jobless Benefits" where she mentions the large number of applications HIRED received for an open receptionist position. The picture Samargia paints brings life to a state statistic that says for every job vacancy there are 7.7 people looking for work. The article can be seen here.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

The statistics are astounding. Approximately 1.3 million women and 835,000 men are physically assaulted by an intimate partner annually in the U.S. It is estimated that one out of every four U.S. women has been assaulted by an intimate partner. Across the nation, women of all races are about equally vulnerable to violence by an intimate partner.*

At HIRED, an important part of an employment counselor's job is to listen to his or her client. Listen to what they say, and even sometimes what they don't. We are committed to helping our clients address a variety of barriers to employment, including domestic violence. Staff members are trained to recognize some of the signs that may be present if a client is involved in a violent relationship, and eight domestic violence specialists are on staff to see clients who are part of Ramsey County's adult and young adult MFIP programs.

Gretchen Wartman, a senior program manager at HIRED who works in Ramsey County, said, "We recognize that it may be very, very difficult for a client to follow through with the established employment plan when he or she is involved in a domestic violence situation. Before landing a job, a client's home life must be stable. We have specially trained counselors on staff to offer support to domestic violence victims, find resources that will help them and adjust their employment goals accordingly."
