Program for Young Parents Receives Award for "Best Practices"

One of HIRED's newest youth programs – the Ramsey County Young Parent Program – is already making a significant impact and garnering the attention of people across the state. The program, which began in January of this year, received a "Best Practices" award from the Minnesota Workforce Council Association for its innovative programming. Serving youth ages 18 to 22 who are on public assistance, the Ramsey County Young Parent Program takes a holistic approach to employment solutions.

Recognizing that many of the youth who HIRED counselors are assisting face multiple barriers to employment – lack of education and work history, a small support network, few skills and homelessness – the organization has established a team of professionals to help youth on a variety of levels. In order to accommodate the many needs young parents have, HIRED's staff includes housing specialists, domestic abuse advocates and mental health professionals, among others.

Gretchen Wartman, a senior program manager at HIRED and employee of the organization since 2000, works with the youth each and every day. When asked what keeps her interested and engaged in her job she says, "The enthusiasm, energy and hope that these youth have is incredibly inspirational. More than any other age group, they're energized and willing to try something new."

In addition to helping youth develop résumés and cover letters and search for employment, HIRED counselors recognize that one of the best things they can do to ensure a successful future and secure employment at a livable wage is to help the youth complete their high school education and pursue a post-secondary education.
