Establishing Good Work Habits – Early
Children learn from the adults around them. They see what we do and mimic. They hear what we say and repeat. For these reasons and so many others, HIRED employees and their children were encouraged to participate in the national "Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work" day held on April 23. In addition to giving the kids a fun, firsthand look at HIRED's work, the event helps to establish good work habits. One of the kids who spent time in HIRED's offices that day was eight-year-old Heaven Holmes.
Daughter of HIRED's Sabathani office receptionist Latresa Holmes, Heaven said she likes working and thinks it's fun. When asked what sorts of things she and her mom did together she said, "I helped mom with the copier, ate lunch with her in the lunchroom, put stamps on the mail, greeted clients with a smile and watched mom answer the phone."
"I also helped clean and stack the books in the lobby," she added.
Amy Barwick, HIRED's director of human resources and coordinator of the event, said, "A day devoted to establishing good work habits and introducing young people to the value of a good job is one that aligns so closely to our mission. The experience is really a win-win for everyone involved."
For 16 years, children across the nation and around the globe have participated in the career program, exposing millions of girls and boys to what a parent or mentor in their lives does during the work day and helping them to set their own goals for future employment.

For now, Heaven has her sights set on a career as an artist. She likes to color and beamed with pride when her mom showed her a brochure she produced for HIRED's Work to Win program. Regardless of where Heaven lands, Latresa is thrilled to have shared this experience with her daughter. She said, "It was a fun day – one that I hope she will remember for years to come. More than anything, I want Heaven to see the value of hard work and that work can be a lot of fun, too." |
