Christina and Rachel: Working Together

HIRED client Christina has her work cut out for her. But, together with her job counselor Rachel, she's put herself in a position to succeed.

As a single mom who's studying to obtain a degree in business management while working as an Assistant Manager at Little Caesars, both Christina's schedule and her budget are tight. "Working at Little Ceasars isn't my dream job, but it pays the bills and keeps me on track," said Christina. "I've got plans for something big in the future, but I need to take it one step at a time."

Christina's background isn't one she's proud to relate. She came to HIRED with a criminal history – as do all participants in the Fresh Start program – and had other barriers she had to overcome, as well. Conquering a bad attitude, poor work habits and a reluctance to accept input or criticism, Christina in many ways was starting from square one.

When Christina began HIRED's Fresh Start program, she worked with Rachel to create a résumé, prepare for interviews and search for jobs. It was Rachel who helped her land her job at Little Caesars, offering encouragement and providing an after-the-fact critique of her interview. Their relationship continues to be one of support and encouragement.

HIRED's Fresh Start program is designed to assist Minnesota Family Investment Program (MFIP) participants who have a criminal record and who are ready to seek employment. The program includes intensive job search skills classes, job placement assistance, and referral to customized training when appropriate. The program boasts an approximate 90% job-retention rate.

"Thanks to HIRED, I'm on my way," said Christina. "I've straightened out my life, and have managed to stay out of trouble for more than a year. That's what a job does; it keeps you focused on the good things."

As for her plans for the future, Christina says: "Someday, I'd like to work with ex-felons and help them find affordable housing and locate employment, kind of like what HIRED did for me. I want to help give people a second chance."

HIRED Begins 2008 With United Way Support

If you've visited the HIRED website lately, you probably noticed a new partner logo at the bottom of the homepage. Beginning on January 1, HIRED is a community partner with the United Way.

In October of last year, HIRED was awarded a grant from the Greater Twin Cities United Way. This is the first time HIRED received a United Way grant, and represents a significant milestone for the organization. The monies provided will help to support HIRED's sector training initiatives.

For more information on the United Way grant or on HIRED's sector training initiatives, contact Laura Vitelli by e-mail.
