Education and Training

One of the most effective methods of preparing for employment, or for re-training for future employment, is to pursue additional education and training. In all of its programs, HIRED encourages clients to seek out the education and training opportunities that will help them succeed in their chosen occupations and careers.* Among the available programs are:

  • Occupational Training: Counselors assist participants to select and register for training programs in high demand career areas at local community and technical colleges, the University of Minnesota, private colleges, or private training providers. Limited financial assistance is available in some programs.
  • Basic Education/English as a Second Language: Program participants can access training to improve reading and math skills. If needed, participants can complete their high school diploma or equivalent. Non-English speaking participants can attend ESL classes.
  • On-The-Job Training (OJT): Customized work experiences that incorporate job training are available in many programs to help participants gain work skills and experience.
  • Internships: Internships are often used in HIRED’s youth, adult and specialized MFIP programs to help participants acquire work skills and experience. An internship is a short- term, paid or unpaid work experience at a local employer. During the internship, participants receive support and assistance learning their job from their HIRED counselor and their supervisor and colleagues.

In addition, some HIRED programs offer support or subsidies to allow clients to take specialized
training courses or workshops. A sample of the courses and training programs in which HIRED
clients have enrolled in the past are listed below. Please note: eligibility for supported training
programs varies from program to program. Not all HIRED clients qualify for support. Clients
should contact their counselors to learn if they are eligible.
