The loss of a job represents much more than just the loss of income. There is a wide range of related concerns — some obvious and immediate, and some with less visible or longer-term consequences — that every worker must consider. HIRED’s counselors are ready to provide information, advice and access to resources that can help each dislocated worker cope with changes in their benefits and other forms of support

Healthcare information: Obtaining affordable individual or family healthcare is often a concern for dislocated workers. HIRED’s employment counselors can help participants identify affordable options, including low-cost, short-term health insurance, and free or subsidized medical care. In emergency situations, some programs have funds that may be used to assist participants with COBRA payments, insurance premiums and co-pays, costs of prescription medications, and other medical costs not covered by insurance.

Public programs: For many dislocated workers, losing a job is a new experience. HIRED’s counselors can help provide information and referrals to other public programs designed to provide short-term support to unemployed or low-income people. Workers who would not ordinarily qualify to participate in these programs can often benefit by taking advantage of income support, training and other services during the period in which they are out of work.

Emergency financial assistance: For workers going through job transitions, a health issue, car repair, leaky roof or other unexpected expense can be a big problem. Limited program funds are available to assist participants who need emergency financial support.
