Channel 12 Calls on Jane Samargia for Insight on Employment Disparities

Yesterday, Channel 12 reporter Renee Banot interviewed HIRED’s executive director Jane Samargia to gain her perspective on a troubling report regarding racial disparities in employment in the Twin Cities area.

HIRED's Executive Director Jane Samargia was interviewed by Channel 12 reporter Renee Banot about racial disparities in employment in the Twin Cities. The July 2 report issued by Algernon Austin of the Economic Policy Institute, titled “Black Metropolitan Unemployment in 2011”, notes that the biggest black-white unemployment rate disparity in the U.S. was in the Twin Cities metropolitan area, where the African American/Black unemployment rate was 3.3 times the white rate.

In her interview, Samargia stated, “That kind of a number doesn’t change overnight.  It requires sustained focus by the entire community over a number of years.  It can’t be the issue today and forgotten tomorrow.”

In addition to offering culturally appropriate services, HIRED is recognized for utilizing sector-based employment initiatives and subsidized employment opportunities to connect African American and other job seekers to family-sustaining jobs.
