Channel 12 Calls on Jane Samargia for Insight on Employment Disparities
Yesterday, Channel 12 reporter Renee Banot interviewed HIRED’s executive director Jane Samargia to gain her perspective on a troubling report regarding racial disparities in employment in the Twin Cities area.
The July 2 report issued by Algernon Austin of the Economic Policy Institute, titled “Black Metropolitan Unemployment in 2011”, notes that the biggest black-white unemployment rate disparity in the U.S. was in the Twin Cities metropolitan area, where the African American/Black unemployment rate was 3.3 times the white rate.
In her interview, Samargia stated, “That kind of a number doesn’t change overnight. It requires sustained focus by the entire community over a number of years. It can’t be the issue today and forgotten tomorrow.”
In addition to offering culturally appropriate services, HIRED is recognized for utilizing sector-based employment initiatives and subsidized employment opportunities to connect African American and other job seekers to family-sustaining jobs.
